Stairs Gulch, Big Cottonwood Canyon
Stairs Gulch, Big Cottonwood Canyon
• Stairs Gulch is a challenging and infrequently used route to the summit of Broads Fork Twin Peaks. This is a steep route, climbing over 5,500 vertical feet in less than 3 miles.
• This route description assumes a late spring / early summer ascent, when the gulch will contain extended consolidated snow fields. This is the preferred time to attempt this route. Expect considerably differing conditions for later summer or autumn attempts, after all snow has melted.
• Stairs Gulch is notorious for monstrous avalanches during winter and early spring
• This route begins across the road from the Storm Mountain Picnic Area in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Take the 6200 South exit (exit #6) off I-215 and follow highway 190 south-east approximately 2 miles to the intersection with Big Cottonwood Canyon road (State Highway 190).

• Skill Level: Moderate, trail gets much steeper after the first 1/2 mile

This is located in a residential area, so show consideration for the property owners.

Hidden Falls, Big Cottonwood Canyon
Hidden Falls, Big Cottonwood Canyon
• Hidden Falls is a nice hike for younger children and the elderly
• Elevation gain of 40 feet
• Total distance of .3 miles
• After crossing the highway from the parking lot, take the lower left trail into the shade of the trees, avoiding the second set of stairs on the right, (these lead to the Mill B North Fork Overlook trail). From here, a short gentle climb is all that is required to reach the mist of the falls, where the tranquil sound of the falling water and the hidden location gives one the sense of being in another world, far from the road.
• This trail is unpaved, and although it only takes a few minutes to cover, it provides terrain interesting enough to make it challenging for youngsters. Please take caution when approaching the falls; the rocks may be slippery from spray.
• To reach the trailhead, drive 4.4 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon on Utah 190. Park in the small lot located on the right (southeast) side of the road in the second, upper curve of the "S-Turn." The trail is above the lot on the opposite (north) side of the road. Additional parking can be found at the lower parking area, where a small road branches right (southeast) from the lower curve of the "S-Turn."
